8th INTERNATIONAL MUSIC COMPETITION
“VALERIA MARTINA - CITTÀ DI MASSAFRA”

R U L E S

ART. 1 - ANNOUNCEMENT

The 8th International music Competition “VALERIA MARTINA - Città di Massafra” is organized by the “Valeria Martina Music Association”. Musicians from all over the world can take place.

ART. 2 - PURPOSES

The competition wants to widespread music, to enhance young musicians from all over the world and to promote the territory cultural and tourist resources.

ART. 3 - WHERE AND WHEN

The Competition is held in Massafra at “Niccolò Andria” School and/or at the Municipality Theatre from 22nd to 28th August 2010.

ART. 4 - SECTIONS AND CATEGORIES

There are 7 sections. All musicians can play free choice pieces
Section 1: Piano Solo 4 and 6 Hands piano*

A Cat. pianists up to 8 years of age (born in 2002 and afterwards) a no more than 5 min. programme;
B Cat. pianists up to 10 years (born in 2000- 2001)a no more than 7 min. programme;
C Cat. pianists up to 12 years (born in 1998-1999) a no more than 10 min. programme;
D Cat. pianists up to 14 years (born in 1996-1997) a no more than 12 min. programme;
E Cat. pianists up to 16 years (born in 1994-1995) a no more than 15 min. programme;
F Cat. pianists up to 19 years (born in 1991-1992-1993) a no more than 20 min. programme;
G Cat. pianists up to 23 years (born in 1987-1988-1989-1990) a no more than 25 min. programme;
H Cat. over 24-year-old pianists (no age limits) a no more than 30 min. programme;

*the category of 4 and 6 Hands piano (one piano) is determined on the average age of the applicants.

Section 2: Soloists (strings-harp-guitar-winds-acccordion-percussion instruments)
A Cat. pianists up to 8 years of age (born in 2002 and afterwards) a no more than 5 min. programme;
B Cat. pianists up to 10 years (born in 2000- 2001) a no more than 7 min. programme;
C Cat. pianists up to 12 years (born in 1998-1999) a no more than 10 min. programme;
D Cat. pianists up to 14 years (born in 1996-1997) a no more than 12 min. programme;
E Cat. pianists up to 16 years (born in 1994-1995) a no more than 15 min. programme;
F Cat. pianists up to 19 years (born in 1991-1992-1993) a no more than 20 min. programme;
G Cat. pianists up to 23 years (born in 1987-1988-1989-1990) a no more than 25 min. programme;
H Cat. over 24-year-old pianists (no age limits) a no more than 30 min. programme.
Section 3: Singing
A Cat. (opera) without diploma applicants a no more than 15min. programme;
B Cat. (opera) with diploma applicants a no more than 20 min. programme.
Section 4: Chamber Music (duo any instrument and/or voice)
A Cat. musicians up to 14 years of age(born in 1996 and afterwards) a no more than 10 min. programme;
B Cat. musicians up to 18 years (born in 1992-1993-1994-1995) a no more than 15 min. programme;
C Cat. musicians up to 23 years (born in 1987-1988-1989-1990-1991) a no more than 25 min. programme;
D Cat. over 24-year-old musicians a no more than 30 min. programme.
Section 5: Chamber Music (any instrument and/or voice from 3 to 9 members)
A Cat. musicians up to 14 years of age(born in 1996 and afterwards) a no more than 10 min. programme;
B Cat. musicians up to 18 years (born in 61992-1993-1994-1995) a no more than 15 min. programme;
C Cat. musicians up to 23 years (born in 1987-1988-1989-1990-1991) a no more than 25 min. programme;
D Cat. over 24-year-old musicians a no more than 30 min. programme;
the category of chamber music is determined on the average age of the applicants.
Section 6: Chamber Choirs, Orchestras ,Bands
(Any instrument and/or voice; min.10 members/ no max. number limit)
A Cat. Choirs no age limits a no more than 20 min. programme
B Cat. Orchestras no age limits a no more than 20 min. programme
C Cat. Bands no age limits a no more than 20 min. programme
Section 7: Composition
Chamber Music (any instrument and/or voice from 3 to 10 members )

Unique category no age limits a no more than 15 min. programme
Compositions must be sent in two copies; it is possible to send also a CD registration. Each score must be anonymous and labelled by a motto. The same motto must be found on an envelope in which there will be: the application form, a copy of the entry fee receipt and a declaration, signed by the author, that the composition is an unpublished work.

ART. 5 - COMMON RULES

The candidates can enrol no more than one category as soloists. Yet soloists can also enrol one category in n°4, 5 (chamber music)or n° 6 sections (chamber choirs/orchestras/bands) paying half entry fees.
Pieces must be played in their original writing. No transcriptions, no reductions are allowed, except the author himself ’s ones. Transcriptions and reductions are allowed just for sections n° 4 ,n° 5 and n° 6. The candidates are not obliged to play by heart.
It is possible to enrol a higher category though the candidate is younger. In this case he/she must ask for it in the application form.
The candidates are not obliged to play for all the time allowed to each category, but the jury can stop the performance in the case it goes beyond the fixed time limits.

ART. 6 - AUDITIONS

The candidates have to show the jury their identity card and give a copy of the music they are going to play immediately before the audition.
The candidates are admitted to the auditions in alphabetical order.
The candidates who may be late can play within the end of their category, only if the jury will. Auditions are open to the public.
At the end of the auditions of each category the verdict will be given, naming the candidates who will be admitted to the Final.

ART. 7 - THE JURY

The jury is made up of musicians of considerable experience and of the president of the “Valeria Martina” Association or one of her delegates. The jury makes a centesimal voting; its judgement can not be questioned.
The jury can ask for a further performance, if necessary. Members of the jury who have any kind of personal relationship or teaching activity with any of the candidates must abstain from judging them. The jury may decide to share prizes among more ex-aequo candidates.

ART. 8 - APPLICATION FORM

For admission to the Competition each candidate has to fill the form arranged by the competition organization or a copy of it and address it to:

Mazzini n. 143, 74016 Massafra (TA) – ITALY within 2nd August 2010, including also a copy of the entry fee receipt and a self-statement of his/her date of birth. Incomplete admission requests will not be accepted.

ART. 9 - ENTRY FEES

The entry fee, not refundable, must be made out within 2nd August 2010 just by one of the following way:

The fees of this category are aggregate amounts, not individual amounts.

Section 5 Chamber Music (from 3 members to the ensamble)

(From 6 to 9 members) € 25,00 (each member)


Section 6 Chamber Choirs, Orchestras, Bands
Single Category

From 10 members upwards € 10,00 (each member).

Section 7 Composition
Each composition € 40,00.

The soloists who need a piano accompanist must ask for in the application form and pay an additional fee of € 30,00. Scores of the music to be played must be sent together with the application form.

ART. 10 - SCORING AND PRIZES

- 1st Absolute Prize from 98 to 100/100 Diploma and a plate
- 1st Prize from 95 to 97/100 Diploma
- 2nd Prize from 90 to 94/100 Diploma
- 3rd Prize from 85 to 89/100 Diploma
- 4th Prize from 80 to 84/100 Diploma
- from 70 to 79/100 Diploma

All competitors will be given a participation certificate.

PRIZES
All prizes, except 1st absolute prizes, will be given at the end of each category.
All 1st absolute prizes competitors will have to play free during the final concert, if they do not they will lose the prize.
The final concert will take place in Massafra in accordance with the following calendar:
-
Saturday 28th August 6,00 p.m. - Final Concert of A,B,C,D,E Categories of Sections N° 1,2,4,5 (Cat. A, B), Section N°6;
- Saturday 28th August 7,30 p.m. - Final Concert of F,G,H Categories of Sections N° 1,2,4 ,5(Cat. C, D), Section N° 3.
Announcement of the winner of Section 7.

The absolute winners of all instruments of sections 1,2 (piano, 4 hands piano, strings, harp, guitar, winds, accordion, percussions), which won’t be ex-aequo, will be awarded:
- E Cat. € 120,00 to the absolute with the highest score
- F Cat. € 150,00 to the absolute with the highest score
- G Cat. € 200,00 to the absolute with the highest score
- H Cat. € 250,00 to the absolute with the highest score

The absolute winners of section 3 (singing) , which won’t be ex-aequo, will be awarded:
- A Cat. € 200,00 to the absolute with the highest score
- B Cat. € 250,00 to the absolute with the highest score

The absolute winners of section 4 (duo), which won’t be ex-aequo, will be awarded:
- C Cat. € 150,00 to the absolute with the highest score
- D Cat. € 200,00 to the absolute with the highest score

The absolute winners of section 5 (chamber music from trio to ensamble), which won’t be ex-aequo, will be awarded:
- C Cat. € 250,00 to the absolute with the highest score
- D Cat. € 300,00 to the absolute with the highest score

The absolute winners of section 6 (choirs, orchestras, bands), which won’t be ex-aequo, will be awarded:
- A Cat. € 300,00 to the absolute with the highest score
- B Cat. € 300,00 to the absolute with the highest score
- C Cat. € 300,00 to the absolute with the highest score

The absolute winner of Section 7 will be awarded:
- Publication of the work by “Salatino Edizioni Musicali”and a plate

SPECIAL PRIZES

A) Among all the absolute winners, awarded with a money prize, performing in the final, a special jury, made up of the president of the association, the art director and some members of the juries of the eliminatory step, will assign:
- A prize of
€ 500,00
- the title of Absolute Winner of the 7 International Music Competition “Valeria Martina” – Città di Massafra
- a cup
- a concert.
B) Among the absolute winners of A,B,C,D categories of sections 1 and 2, and those ones of A,B categories of sections 4 and 5, the jury will assign
- a prize of
€ 150,00
- two € 50,00 orders, offered by “Le Muse” - Luigi Papagni- Bari, to buy music books.
C) “Classical Music Prize”:
€ 15 0,00 to the best performance of classical music.
D) ”Contemporary Music Prize”:
€ 150,00 to the best performance of music from 1970 afterwards.
E) The teacher who will enrol the largest number of students in the competition will receive a Diploma and a plaque.
F) The teachers, with the largest number of students awarded with first prize, will be invited to be members of the jury in the 2011 edition of the competition.
G) The teachers of First Prize musicians will receive a Diploma and a medal.


N.B. Concerts will be refunded just within the musicians’ travelling expenses.
N.B. Taxes are to be deducted from all prizes

Art. 11

The competitors can not claim any compensation for the final concerts, even if they will be televised or transmitted via radio or in the case they will be photographed or recorded.

Art. 12

The “Valeria MARTINA“ Association is not responsible of any accidents to people and things. Travelling and location are the competitors’ expense. The organizers of the contest can abolish those categories which would not have the minimum of applicants. In this case the organizers will give communication as soon as possible and will refund the enrolment fees.

Art. 13

All candidates must accept all the rules of the Competition .In any case of controversy the Italian text is valid and the Taranto Court is competent.

Art. 14

Personal data will be treated according to the law n. 675/96.
